Bears' Jarrell makes transition on soccer field

MOUNT AIRY - Endurance is a key element in soccer at any level.
Adam Jarrell has seen his share of time at different positions on the field in his experience with the Mount Airy soccer team. This year, Jarrell will see plenty of time at midfield.
Might as well break out the running shorts.
Midfielders cover a lot of ground and playa big part in controlling the pace of the game. Some guys might wear down in the later minutes. Jarrell is built for the long haul. .
After playing fullback last season for the Bears, the senior captain is ready to take on the new challenge. A big key to being ready to go every night is conditioning.
"A much tougher position. A lot of running," Jarrell said after the Bears' 3-1 season opening road win against North Surry on Aug. 24.
A defensive midfielder also has to be solid all-around. Skills like winning the ball and controlling possession, passing and having good position on the field.
Jarrell also communicates with his teammates - many of them unfamil­iar faces.

The Bears (2-1) have very little ex­perience - with six freshmen and three sophomores on the roster. Sever­al upperclassmen from last year opted not to return to the team. Jose Suarez and Meng Lor are the only other sen­iors on the club. Jarrell said he thinks teamwork will more than make up for the loss.
"We work really well together. We pass the ball well. We move it around a lot better than we did last year. I don't think we have the stars we did last year but we have much better team chem­istry," Jarrell said.
The Bears are quick and kick the ball around well. Jarrell controlled the middle of the field for key stretches during the North Surry contest. He had one assist in the victory.
Jarrell started every game at stopper for the Bears last year. The 'role will be a little different, but Jarrell still pro­vides much-needed stability. He said he believes the team can go far.
"I think we are going to have a bet­ter season than last year. At first when I came out I was kind of worried be­cause we have such a young team but we've come together so well I think we are going to have a really good year," Jarrell said.
Bears head soccer coach Shane Castevens said the senior leader's

character stands out the most. JarrelL puts in the extra work before game night.
"He's 100 percent 100 percent of the time. That's his attitude. He sets an example for the rest of the team. That's the reason why he's the senior captain. The way he plays on the field that's the way he practices," Castevens said.
Castevens was looking for a player who can hold his own for the duration of a game. The wiry Jarrell fits the bill.
'Try to control the middle of the field and the tempo of the game. Try to win balls. To direct the play. He's maybe a little bit out of his element for the time being because he's not used to the position but I think he's going to grow into it and do a good job," Castevens said. "He's got the stamina. He can stay at that speed for 80 min­utes. That's one thing you look for. Somebody who can hold up in the middle.
After a tough loss to Surry Central, the Bears rebounded for a second win against the Greyhounds.
Tonight, Mount Airy gets its first look at Bishop McGuinness, a team adjusting to life in the Northwest I-A Conference.
Jarrell shouldn't have too many problems holding his own in the mid­dle.

We're starting soccer season around here! The Bears won their season opener against the Greyhounds last night! Adam played a great game! He is one of the captains this year.

The Weekend

This is part of my e-mail to Ethan today...thought it might make a good post...

We went to church in Dobson, then to Mount Airy...Cortney Brown Guerro asked Adrian to bless her baby today, so that's why we went to Sacrament Meeting in Mount Airy. Cute baby.

Adam was asked to serve on the Stake Youth Council, so he went to a meeting at the stake center this afternoon prior to the youth fireside. Logan has gone to the fireside now, too. Adrian has been to Winston today, too, for a high council meeting right after Sacrament meeting. Poor little red car barely got back to Mount Airy and had to turn around and head back to Winston again!

Logan and I worked on some of his scout stuff today and he also worked on Duty to God. Adam finished a book for English class - school starts on Tuesday and Seminary starts tomorrow. Adam has decided to go to Mount Airy to Seminary this year. It will work out better transportation-wise we think.

Cory has been on a scout trip. Kristen is doing well with her pregnancy. Elise and Ian are cute as ever. We sure had fun with them and everyone last weekend on the innertubing trip!

On Saturday - yesterday, we (Adrian) canned peaches, and they worked on lawnmowers, trying to get them running, which they did, and the guys all mowed. We got some housework done and I worked on my pictures a little. Yesterday was our week to clean the Dobson building, so we did that last night, then did a little school shopping. Hard to believe it's time for school to start. I'm trying to get back in the routine. Things are busy at SCC... Classes start there on Aug. 18.

Guess I'd better go...say hello to Wayne, Nancy, Lisa, Shawn...everyone out there. When do Nate and Alayna leave?

The Jarrell Family Goes Down the River

We all had a lot of fun together floating down the Dan River last Saturday!
