Baseball and more...

Adam loves to pitch ball and I enjoy pitching with him, although my arm and shoulder don't feel quite the same as they did about 30 years ago! One thing we usually do when we pitch is a little "game" that my daddy did with me when we pitched when I was a teenager. To help me with my game, Daddy would through the ball short, high, to one side or the other, grounders, switching up to keep me guessing where the ball was going to go. It made it fun and challenging and made me a better shortstop. I do the same thing with Adam, and for the record, he covers a lot more territory than I did. He likes the challenge of getting to the ball and it's a fun game for us. And it makes me think of my dad and the fun we had together. Just for an instant sometimes, when Adam and I are outside in the yard, it seems the generations are linked by this simple act of throwing the baseball to each other and I see myself as my dad and catch a glimpse of the past, the present, and the future all at once. I can almost see Adam pitching with his son or daughter in times to come and remembering this little game we played together. It's a small thing, but is a reminder to me of the patience my dad had in teaching me to throw and field the ball and of the time he took to spend time with me doing something I was interested in. Even though he was busy working, he would always stop and pitch with me and it is a treasured memory of a fun time with my Daddy. He's been gone from this existence for over 20 years now, but those good memories will live on forever.

This is a beautiful story. I love it. It brings back memories for me too, of our wonderful Daddy. It also evoked feelings of the eternal family backwards and forwards, as I think of time with my own children. Playing with your kids is a timeless, precious time, moreso as we get older and realize the value of time spent together. Thank you for sharing this small incident in such a beautiful way.
Love,
Verona

agreed...very beautifully written. i've heard you tell about that, but it always gives me warm feelings to think about grandpa. because you have always so readily shared memories and stories about grandpa, i feel like i knew him a lot longer than two years. cory & i were talking to elise about our grandparents that have passed on. i told her some stories about grandpa arnold & grandpa jarrell. i think she feels close to them as well. she talked about her grandpa that made the chair at grammy's. she said in the most tender voice, "he had such beautiful fabric." =) we told her that she probably knew them before she was born and how happy they were that she was coming to our family. and knowing grandpa, i feel sure that he was! thanks again for helping keep our family eternal...
